The generous cockpit features a large lounge, extra sofa, dining table for 12 guests, and there is also an option for a huge sunbathing lounge on the fore deck.

The swift, pretty Elan 40 is a mid-priced racer/cruiser designed by Rob Humphreys that is being pitched as a strong player in the highly competitive 40-foot market. I jumped aboard for a test sail on the Chesapeake last fall to see if the reality matches the marketing.

With the 40-footer, the Bali range is now particularly consistent. Just like its big sisters, the 4.5 and 4.3 (whilst awaiting the 5.4), the Bali 4.0 offers an open space between the cockpit and the saloon. A glazed door which folds away on electric rams allows the boat to go from the Cozy mode (closed) to the Lounge mode (open to the anchorage)… Once again on the 4.0 we find the forward cockpit – there is no trampoline on the Balis – and the very nice glazed doors which disappear totally to offer optimum ventilation.
